Start Here: Your First Steps With a Rescue Dog

You just brought home a rescue dog — or you’re about to. Either way, you’re in the right place. This is the page I wish existed when I fostered my first dog.

Before anything else, take a breath. What you’re feeling right now — the overwhelm, the second-guessing, the “did I make a mistake?” — is completely normal. Almost every new rescue dog owner feels it. And almost every rescue dog needs the same thing in those first days: space, calm, and time.

The 3-3-3 Rule: The Most Important Thing to Know

The 3-3-3 rule is the framework that changes everything. It describes the three stages most rescue dogs go through when they come home:

  • 3 days — Your dog is overwhelmed. They may hide, refuse food, shut down, or seem “fine” but be quietly terrified. This is normal. Don’t push it.
  • 3 weeks — Your dog is starting to understand the routine. They’re testing boundaries, showing their personality, and beginning to feel safe. This is when the real work begins.
  • 3 months — Your dog is home. They know the routine, trust you, and are showing you who they really are. This is when most people say “I can’t believe this is the same dog.”

Understanding this framework will save you from making the most common mistake: doing too much, too soon. Read the full 3-3-3 guide here →

What to Buy Right Now

You don’t need much. But a few things make a real difference in those first days. Here’s what I recommend for every new rescue dog owner:

About Bug

Bug is one of my foster dogs — a senior, special-needs pup who came to me completely shut down. He wouldn’t eat, wouldn’t make eye contact, and spent his first three days hiding behind the couch. Today he’s a different dog. His story is the reason this site exists.

If your dog is hiding, refusing food, or seems like they’ve given up — I’ve been there. It gets better. Read more about me and Bug →
